IBS Turns 75!
Gesshin Claire Greenwood | November 20, 2024
On November 16, 2024, in a day full of reflection, gratitude, and joy, the Institute of Buddhist Studies celebrated its 75th year and annual memorial service. The Kodo was adorned with flowers and offerings, and students led attendees in a “Ritual of Gratitude and Promise.” The ritual included passages and prayers from various Buddhist traditions, and culminated in a flower and incense offering. Participants were given the option of offering flowers to one of many Buddha statues.
Following the ritual, President Scott Mitchell and IBS Board of Trustees Chair Leroy Morishita spoke briefly on the history of IBS and the progress IBS has made as an institution. At 3pm, current students and IBS alum spoke about their theses projects and how IBS has impacted them.
The event closed with a tribute to Rev. Dr. Seigen Yamaoka, who passed away this year, and the annual memorial (eitaikyo) service. A lively reception followed.
IBS has had a long and rich history, beginning as a study group for Japanese Americans following the displacement of World War II. We invite you to watch this video on the history of our school, and all we have to celebrate.
