For more than fifty years, IBS has been advancing Buddhist scholarship in America through institutional publications as well as faculty scholarship and research.
Our institutional journal, Pacific World, is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal generously supported by BDK America. Our partnership with the University of Hawai’i Press supports the publication of two academic book series. And our blog, the Ten Thousand Things, engages scholars and practitioners and features the work of our faculty, students, and guest scholars.
The Pacific World: Journal of the Institute of Buddhist Studies, is an annual, open-source and peer-reviewed journal in English devoted to the dissemination of historical, textual, critical and interpretive studies on Buddhism generally and Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism particularly to both academic and lay readerships.
With the support of BDK America, the Institute of Buddhist Studies publishes the Contemporary Issues in Buddhist Studies series. The scope of the series is broadly defined, so as to include the full range of the Buddhist tradition at all periods in its development, and of methodological approaches to the study of the tradition.
Pure Land Buddhist Studies publishes scholarly works on all aspects of the Pure Land Buddhist tradition. Historically this includes studies of the origins of the tradition in India, its transmission into a variety of religious cultures, and its continuity into the present. The series is supported by the FBA Legacy Fund.
Our institutional blog’s title, “The Ten Thousand Things” is an homage to Dogen’s profound advice on studying the self, publishes smart, accessible writing that speaks to both scholars and practitioners of Buddhism.
