Luke Thompson received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2017, where he researched medieval Japanese Buddhist intellectual history, focusing in particular on a resurgence in devotion to Śākyamuni around Nara during the twelfth century. More broadly, he is interested in Buddhist historical thought and historiography, and in anthropological approaches to Buddhism. He has taught courses on Buddhism and East Asia at seven universities in England and the US, as well as in four New York State prisons. On the side he works as a tutor of academic and Classical Japanese, and as a translator.
