The Institute of Buddhist Studies has been offering Buddhist education in Berkeley since 1949. From its beginnings as an educational and training program for American Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, the Institute of Buddhist Studies has grown and evolved and into the accredited graduate school that it is today. Our graduates are serving the greater community as ministers, chaplains, and Buddhist scholars.
Just as our past became our present, our present will become our future. Let the Buddha Dharma offer the foundation for a compassionate and unified world. Give the gift of Buddhist education!
Our students come from various backgrounds and are committed to the study of Buddhism, studying together and sharing their religious traditions in deep respect. The IBS Student Scholarship program was established to attract, encourage, and support students enrolled in our degree and certificate programs. IBS graduates contribute to society in many ways:
-
- Shin Buddhist Ministry students, upon graduation and completion of their ordination, can serve as Kaikyoshi (head) Ministers in BCA churches and temples.
- Chaplaincy Students can serve in hospitals, healthcare facilities, and hospice, in prisons, in the military, or within their own Buddhist communities.
- Shin and Buddhist Research Students can study to become teachers, scholars, and authors to spread the Buddhist teachings in the academic world.
